Culturally sensitive and culturally competent educational materials.

The following materials have been developed with and evaluated by each of the cultural and/or ethnic communities represented. In addition, each publication has been evaluated.

CANCER

• Breast Cancer: How to Examine Your Breasts
  Describes three simple ways a woman can save her own life through early detection of breast cancer. 60 languages including Amharic, Bosnian, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Khmer, Oromo, Russian, Spanish and Somali.
• Cervical Cancer: Learn About Cervical Cancer
  Discusses risk factors and warning signs for cervical and endometrial cancers. 34 languages including Arabic, Greek, Hmong, Laotian, Spanish, Somali, and Urdu.
• Mammography: A Women’s Guide to Mammography
  Presents the importance of early detection of breast cancer and the vital role of mammography. 34 languages including Bosnian, French, Hmong, Korean, Spanish, Somali and Tibetan
• Prostate Cancer: What You Have to Know About Prostate Cancer
  Explains the warning signs of prostate cancer and what to do if its presence is suspected. 33 languages including Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Japanese, Portugese, Spanish, and Somali.
• Smoking (Lung Cancer)
  Uses art and text to teach about cancerous tumors in the lung and the toll the smoker's body pays. 27 languages including Arabic, English, Hmong, Spanish, Somali, Tibetan and Vietnamese.
• Caring for Cancer Patients at Home
  Details the techniques needed for improving the quality of life for cancer patients. 2 languages including Farsi (Persian) and Dari

HIV/AIDS

• AIDS Education
  Provides basic information about HIV/AIDS, how to change unhealthy behavior, and who is at risk. Ten pages of text in simplified, friendly English to appeal to immigrant teens, other new readers of English, and also health educators who work with the minority groups. 3 languages including Hmong, Khmer and XXX.

Somali

• Working with Somali Women
  Professionals will find how to work with Somali immigrants 2 languages including English and Somali.
• Working with Somali Women (Female Circumcision)
  Professionals will find vital information regarding the unique problems of female-circumcision. 1 language: English

Community Profiles

• South Asian, Russian Jewish, European American, Somali, Bosnian, Albanian, Hmong, Nuer, Ukrainian, Jewish American, Vietnamese Each profile provides general cultural information understanding there is great variability among people in any group. The topics included in each profile include History and Demographic Information, Religion, Language and Communication Styles, Family Structure and Roles, Social Values, Dating and Marriage, Maternal and Child Health, Nutrition, Death and Dying, Health Care Values, Beliefs and Practices, Traditional Healing and Specific Health Problems. In addition, each profile includes suggestions for health care providers, examples of community organizations and additional resources.

Cultural Competency

• CARING ACROSS CULTURES: The Provider’s guide to cross-cultural health.
  Caring Across Cultures is about cultural competency in heatlh care and social service. It is designed to help providers work with people who are from different cultures or backgrounds. An examination of the role of culture in health can increase both the effectiveness of treating culturally diverse patients and help achieve healthier lives for all.
• SIX STEPS TOWARD CULTURAL COMPETENCE: How to meet the health care needs of immigrants and refugees.
  In 1996, the Minnesota Public Health Association's Immigrant Health Task Force published a report to assist health care professionals, consumers, administrators, scholars, and policy makers become more culturally competent. This report is Six Steps Toward Cultural Competency.
