Unit 1: Overview of Cultural Competency

This unit will address:

What is culture and how does it influence your thoughts and behaviors?

What is cultural competence and what are the benefits of becoming culturally competent?

Models to assess your own cultural competence.

Recommended guidelines and strategies to becoming more culturally competent.

Participants will:

Understand the role of culture in cross-cultural interactions.

Learn to establish effective positive cross-cultural relationships/interactions.

Learn models to become culturally competent.

Learn effective strategies to becoming culturally competent.

Unit 2: Cross-Cultural Communication

This unit will address:

The importance of Cross-Cultural Communication.

Benefits of cross-cultural communication.

Global communication styles.

Non-verbal communication.

Participants will:

Understand how cross-cultural communication influences interactions.

Learn strategies to more effectively establish cross-cultural relationships.

Learn listening and interviewing skills that improve communication.

Unit 3: Working with Interpreters

This unit will address:

Ethical and legal issues regarding medical interpreting.

The interpreter code of ethics.

Guidelines for working with an interpreter.

Resources for accessing interpreters.

Participants will:

Learn the need for trained interpreters.

Learn the ethical and legal issues with medical interpreters.

Acquire skills in working with an interpreter.

Unit 4: Culturally-Specific Communities

This unit will address:

One cultural group addressing topics such as: history, religious practices, communication styles, cultural beliefs and practices, and traditional health care practices.

* This unit can be customized to address more specific issues, such as the Hmong culture and Disability or Somali culture and Mental Health.  (for pricing see customized training unit).

Participants will:

Gain an increased understanding of the cultural community discussed.

Learn strategies to better serve the community discussed.

Time: 2 hours

Unit 5: Cross-Cultural Mental Health

This unit will address:

Three cross-cultural factors effecting mental health.

The impact of migration on mental health.

The impact of racism and prejudice on health.

Tools to help increase mental health cross-culturally.

Participants will:

Learn the ways that culture impacts mental health.

Be able to describe some traditional treatment for mental health.

Identify the stages of the refugee process, and its impact on health.

Unit 6: Culture of Poverty

This unit will address:

A framework for understanding and working with individuals and families with low or limited outcomes.

Participants will:

Learn poverty statistics and about the poverty process and plight.

Learn the hidden rules and driving forces for those who live in poverty.

Understand the impact of poverty on communication, family structure, and everyday life.

Learn strategies for systems change to enhance services offered to people living in poverty.

Unit 7: Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity

This unit will address:

A framework for understanding the way people respond to cultural differences.

Participants will:

Learn Milton Bennett's Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity

Identify the six stages of increasing sensitivity to cultural differences.

Learn how the model can increase your capacity for intercultural sensitivity.

Learn how to apply this information to increase your effectiveness in working and living in an increasingly global community.

Unit 8: Customized Training Unit

This unit is designed with the client to cover a specific cross-cultural issue.

All core training units can be customized to meet an organizations needs.

Some recent customized trainings have included: Teaching Across Cultures; Cultural Competency - Working with At Risk Families; When Two Cultures Collide - Workforce Issues and Strategies; The CLAS Standards - Navigating Your Way Through; Somali Patients with Disabilities; Hmong Cancer Patients.
